Independent Testing Technologies. Inc. has conducted visual observations and compaction tests at the above referenced site in Albertville. Minnesota. Our services were conducted on an intermittent trip basis. The scope of our work was limited to the following: · Observing the bottoms of the completed mass excavations for the proposed building pads. · Drilling hand auger borings in the bottom of the completed'excavations. · Evaluating the suitability of the exposed soils for support of the anticipated fill and building loads. · Conducting compaction tests in fill placed to attain proposed sub grade elevation. · Summarizing the results of our services in a written report. DESIGN INFORMATION We understand the proposed construction will consist of single family dwellings. We further assume that the structures: · Building Pads are 60' deep . Deviations from the above design information could necessitate altering our conclusions and recommendations. BACKGROlJND INFORMATION A Grading and Erosion Control Plan prepared by E.G. Rud & Sons. dated February 8. 2000. was made available tor our use at the site. This grading plan was used in conjunction with our observation and testing work. as well as preparation tor this report. EXCAVATION OBSERVATIONS We observed the excavations for the proposed building areas on an intermittent basis during the period from April 26. 2000 through September 6, 2000. Our observations consisted primarily of periodic visits to the site coordinated with the excavating contractor. During our visits, shallow hand auger borings were conducted'in the bottoms of the completed excavations. In some portions of the site, test pits "Yere excavated by the contractor at our request to aid in exploring subsurface soil conditions. The soils encountered were classified in general accordance with ASTM D2488. Estimates were made of the soil strength characteristics, based on resistance to advancement of the hand auger. The soils exposed in the bottoms of the completed excavations and encountered in hand auger borings and test pits consisted of naturally deposited soils. These soils consisted of lean clay. sandy lean clay. clayey sand. and silty sand with lenses of wet poorly graded sand. The soils encountered were judged to be suitable for support of the fill and anticipated structural loadings. . Minnesota Page 3 In the majority of the excavated areas. subsurface water \vas observed entering the excavation. The excavations \vere kept in a relatively dry condition so that we could observe the excavation bottoms prior to placing till. Observations pertaining to elevations and locations were made and referenced to construction staking set by project surveyors and the contractor. Based on this information. it is our opinion a suitabk l: I latt:ral on:rsize of tht: ~xcavation bottom and subsequent till \Vas maintained arollnd th~ pt:rimeter of the planned building pads. FILL COMPACTION TESTING During the period of May 3.2000 through July. \ve conducted a total of 59 soil density tests in the placed to attain proposed subgrade elevation. These density tests were conducted primarily on an intermittent basis. The tield density tests were then evaluated against the laboratory standard proctor maximum dry density (ASTM 0698) to arrive at a percent compaction level for that test location. The results of these tests have been sent to you under separate cover as they became available. These test results indicate that the recommended minimum compaction level was met or exceeded at the locations and elevations of final tests. In the areas where the initial tests indicated insufficient compaction was attained with the initial compactive effort, the area was reworked until subsequ~nt tests designated "retest" indicated the recommended compaction level had been achieved. Such reworking normally consisted of aeration to attain proper moisture content and then recompaction, or replacement of the wet fill soils. In most areas, the on-site clay soils were used as compacted fill. These natural clay soils were generally at a moisture content above optimum. SUMMARY A summary of the excavation observations we performed in the building excavations is presented in the attached tabulation. Estimated excavation bottom elevations are included in this tabulation. The attached tabulation indicates lots where earthwork has been completed in accordance with project specifications. Based upon the results of our visual observations and hand auger borings. it is our opinion that the soils tinally exposed in the observed excavations consisted of naturally deposited soils. These soils \vere judged to be suitable for support of till and foundation loads. The results of 59 soil compaction tests taken during filling operations indicate that final tests met or exceeded the specitied minimum compaction le\'t~1 ~lt the devations and locations tested. In the majority of the building pads. clayey site soils \vere used for compacted till at depths where subsurface water may be present. I f future foundation exc,l\.ation. primarily deeper \valk-our footin!2'.s. extend in to these saturated soils. some softenin!2'. or disturbance mav - -. occur. I f this does occur. some subcutting and replacement \vith a free draining sand-gravel \vill become necessary at the time of building construction. We have attempted to make observations and perform tests representative of the work executed but have not observed or tested each and every increment of the work.
