GUARDIAN ANGEL'S "ENGEL HAUS" GROWS FASTER THAN EXPECTED It's been 18 months since the Guardian Angels facility, Engel Haus, opened in Albertville. The first assisted living community to make its home in Albertville, the 63 apartments hit capacity this past October, an entire year before projected. The nonprofit Christian organization currently is home to nearly 70 residents and has over 60 employees. The German-themed senior home that has both independent living and memory care, is lively and pleasant to visit with a lot of community support. "We had a great response from the community," Engel Haus administrator Andrea Erickson said during a recent tour. It was such a great response that Guardian Angels Board of Directors has already begun preliminary discussion on phase two in Albertville. continued on page 2 FIRE SERVICE AWARDS The Albertville City Council recognized the following members of the Albertville Fire Department for their years of service: Shawn Olson (10 years), Eric Sovis (15 years), and Steve Long (20 years). Tim Daly was presented a recognition of retirement for his 15'/2 years of service to the department. Jacob Kreutner received the Top Caller Award r" tad\ 4 for responding to the most calls .` and Brad Lawinger received the Paul Heinen Above and Beyond Award for service beyond regular duty. The newest change is that the senior living community has now begun to work with the St. Michael - Albertville School District. "We've had bands and choirs in before, but we're truly looking at ways we can do intergenerational projects together," Erickson said. Aside from organized cooperative projects and events, Engel Haus hosts Kaffee and Kuchen [German for coffee & cake] each day from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. It's a time for anyone in the community to come in and join seniors for a coffee hour. And a treat of course. "Engel Haus is known for its food," Engel Haus Community Outreach & Marketing Coordinator Jay Jay Chan explained. The coffee hour is complimentary and all of the community is welcome to attend anytime. "What really sets our community apart is having the Guardian Angels name and community and the options for transitional care, nursing home care, and adult daycare," explained Erickson, noting that the Guardian Angels name is very respected when it comes to senior living communities and the various options of care. "Needs are always changing and our current residents always take priority when needs do change," Chan said. Currently Engel Haus is at capacity, but needs constantly change so there are revolving occupancies. Call Jay Jay Chan for the latest on openings: 763.498.4594. Currently, the City of Albertville provides fire service to the western section of Otsego. This service contract arrangement has been in place for many years and discussion has just begun between the two cities on the possibility of forming joint ownership, similar to the way Joint Powers Water is run. Albertville has benefited from the financial investment that comes from Otsego, which covers about 40% of the fire department budget annually. In the same respect, Otsego depends on Albertville for the fire coverage, as they do not have a Fire Department of their own. The City of Otsego also receives fire coverage from Rogers and Elk River. The discussion of joint ownership has just begun. Earlier this year the two cities received grant money to study shared services, which is currently underway. The process is expected to be lengthy and no change will happen this year. The City of Albertville is currently hiring election judges Election judges are responsible for many aspects of the Election Day process including directing voters, maintaining order, signing voters in, and registering voters, both on election day and the weeks leading up to Election Day. Serving as an election judge is a great opportunity to learn about elections and also to serve the community. Election judges must take an oath of service and can still vote either on Election Day or by absentee voting. A variety of shifts are available to accommodate schedules. To date, the project has been discussed only in general terms. No permits for development or construction have been applied for. In concept, the Mall of Entertainment would be on 18 acres of land in northwest Albertville and includes a 50,000 square foot entertainment center, 275 room Marriott Hotel, 50,000 square foot waterpark, and restaurants. A development such as the Mall of Entertainment could very much compliment the area's existing retail and commercial businesses and trigger more development in the northwest corner of Albertville. Further discussion with the developers is expected late this spring. The city has a specific webpage relating to the development and information will be added as it becomes available. Visit www.ci.albertville.mn.us/mall-of- entertainment. ICE ARENA UPDATE The St. Michael -Albertville School District is pursuing the possibility of a special bond election in the winter of 2017 to seek voter approval for an addition to the ice arena and other district needs. Prior to the special election, the School Board has approved a Capital Projects Task Force to research and prepare recommendations of district facility needs that are identifiable, necessary, and timely that would warrant voter approval. In addition to the Capital Projects Task Force, the St. Michael -Albertville Ice Arena Design Committee is now in place and has already had several meetings and tours of area arenas. The committee is comprised of two members from each entity: Albertville, St. Michael, Youth Hockey, and the STMA School District. Their role is to make a recommendation to the Ice Arena Board as far as what is needed. The goal is that the early 2017 bond election would allow time for a well -researched capital improvement bond proposal to take place as well as an engaged, informed discussion. This would also allow the new superintendent, who is to be hired, time to settle into the position. The School Board will need to authorize a capital improvement bond election no later than November 21, 2016 and will be based upon proposal, need, and reasonable cost.
