2015 Fall/Winter Issue"•+wT C `..iyyt`-ter•--•-ar ki,7 AF BEST III The Albertville Fire Department is celebrating its 75'"Anniversary this year. The initial Fire Department organizational meeting took place on February 2, 1940. The original Department included 41 members of the community. Joseph Schmidt was the first Fire Chief and Wilfred Scherber served as the first Fire Department President. The oldest member of the original group, William Braun, was born in 1888. The population of Albertville was around 230 people and the Department responded to about 5-10 calls a year. Today the Albertville Fire Department consists of up to 33 firefighters and includes a reserve division. This past April, the City hired its first full-time Fire Chief and the Department's leadership team includes the Chief, Assistant Fire Chief, 3 Captains, and 3 Lieutenants. The Albertville Fire Department serves the entire City of Albertville and a large portion of the City of Otsego. This service - area covers approximately 14 square miles with a population of more than 12,000 residents. The Department responds to approximately 300 calls per year and also provides Fire Marshal and Emergency Management services for both cities. Keep your family safe with a working smoke alarm in every bedroom. Did you know that roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m when most people are asleep? Smoke alarms save lives. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out. In fact, having a working smoke alarm cuts the chances of dying in a reported fire in half! When it comes to smoke alarms, it's about "location, location, location". The key message of this year's Fire Prevention Week campaign, October 4-10, is to install smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. Find more info at: www.firepreventionweek.org UTILITY eBI LLS Do you receive your water bill electronically? Mailbox Repairs: The Public Works Department is gearing up for winter and the upcoming plowing season. Now is a good time to check your mailboxes and posts. The City will not be responsible for mailboxes knocked over as a result of a weak post. Trash Cans: During the snow season, Public Works asks residents to refrain from putting trash cans on the street or sidewalk. Trash cans should be out of the way, so snow plow drivers can safely clear the streets for residents. Snow Forts: Parents should make sure their child's snow fort is set well back from the street and driveway and refrain from allowing snow forts in the mounds of snow left at the ends of driveways from snow plows. Snow Removal: Property owners should shovel, plow, or blow snow onto their property or boulevard adjacent to their property and not in the street. It is unlawful to place snow on a public street. %Snow placed in the street can become compacted and could turn into hard mounds of ice.
