2013 Fall/Winter IssueJ F27 STMA UNITED SOCCER CLUB 3 FIRE PREVENTION 4 NEW SENIOR LIVING CAMPUS UNDERWAY Guardian Angels of Elk River, "a faith based, senior not -for -profit, care provider since 1965 with a Mission of Sharing Christ's love", has begun construction of their new senior campus in Albertville, entitled "Engel Haus". The new senior living center is located at the intersection of Jason Avenue NE (CR 18) and Kassel Avenue NE. Engel Haus is the German name for Angel House and will be designed around a German/Bavarian decor complementing the history and culture of the Albertville and St. Michael area. Phase I of this senior campus will consist of a 63,700 square foot two-story building. It will include 30 apartments designed around catered living, 16 apartments offering assisted living, and 17 secured memory care suites. The residents will enjoy hosting their friends and family in the __A beautifully designed German accented common spaces. The 15-acre site will see many improvements during construction over the next 10 months with the anticipated opening of Engel Haus to be in August 2014. As part of the project, Kassel Avenue NE between Jason Avenue NE and 49th Street NE will be reconstructed and the large stockpile of dirt on the current property will be used to level the site. Guardian Angels is now taking inquiries and names for the waiting list and you may contact Kari McHenry, the Marketing Coordinator, by calling 763.498.4594 or check out their website at www.guardianangeismn.org. Please join us for a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, October 9 at 2:00 p.m. located at 5101 Kassel Avenue NE. MEMORIAL PARK Memorial Park was finished this fall and a park dedication ceremony was held on Sunday, September 22. The project began as a tribute to a tragic accident that occurred in 2008 when a bus of Pelican Rapids band students, returning from a trip to Chicago, overturned. Many students were injured and one life was lost. In years following the accident, a roadside memorial was frequented by many until it had to be removed for work on 1-94 in 2012. The new park is intended to memorialize the accident, as well as, all lives lost on local roadways. The park's garden has been inspired by the life of Jessica Lynn Weishair, who died in the bus accident, and her love of butterflies and nature. The garden is located north of 1-94 and south of Hunter's Lake at the intersection of 62nd Street NE and 63rd Street NE. The park project was made possible through private donations, generous volunteers, the Albertville Fire Department, the community of Pelican Rapids, and a local Eagle Scout. During this period no parking is allowed on City streets between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. regardless of weather conditions. Vehicles should refrain from parking on the street during and after a snowfall until the plows have cleared the street. Mailbox Repairs: The Public Works Department is gearing up for winter and the upcoming plowing season. Now is a good time to check your mailboxes and posts. Check for obvious damage such as cracked boards and posts, missing screws, etc. Also look at ground level to make sure your post is still in good condition and will withstand the weight of snow from the plows. Repairs are easier to do now than when the ground is frozen. The City will not be responsible for mailboxes knocked over as a result of a weak post. Trash Cans: During the snow season, the Public Works Department asks residents to refrain from putting trash cans on the street or sidewalk. Snow plow drivers want to clear the streets for the safety of residents and trash cans need to be out of the way. Snow Forts: Parents should make sure their child's snow fort is set well back from the street and driveway. It can be dangerous to build snow forts in the mounds of snow left at the ends of driveways from snow plows. Snow Removal: Property owners should shovel, plow or blow snow onto their property or boulevard adjacent to their property and not in the street. Snow should not be shoveled into any public street. Snow placed in the street can be compacted and turn into hard mounds of ice. It can be dangerous if a plow truck hits these mounds of ice and could result in damage to the plow truck. i NEW RESTAURANTS IN TOWN Two new restaurants will be opening in town.
