ST. MICHAEL-ALBERTVILLE ICE ARENA BOARD MINUTES
May 10,2021
6:00 p.m.
Present: Chairman Larry Sorensen and members, Keith Wettschreck, Walter Hudson, Aaron Cocking,
Tim Lewis, Ryan Gleason and Kari Dwinnell. Also present: City Administrator Adam Nafstad, City
Finance Director Tina Lannes, STMA Arena Manager Grant Fitch and School and Ground Director
Jason Bichler. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by Chairman Sorensen.
Set Agenda
Members Hudson\Lewis moved to set the agenda as amended. All voted aye.
2020 Audit Presentation
Tyler See presented the 2020 financial statement audit report which provided an unqualified opinion.
Members Cocking\Gleason moved to accept the 2020 audit report as presented. All voted aye.
Approval of Minutes
Members Gleason\Hudson moved to approve the minutes of the April 12, 2021 Board Meeting as
presented. Hudson, Wettschreck, Cocking, Lewis and Gleason voted aye. Dwinnell abstained.
Finance Reports
Lannes presented the finance reports.
Members Cocking\Lewis moved to approve the April list of claims totaling $49,990.78 and the April
Financial Report as presented. All voted aye.
Arena Manager's Report
Fitch presented the Arena Managers report mentioning that the hours sold April was 234 hours which
was more than projected. In addition, Fitch stated that the estimate to do maintenance on the 20-year-
old Zamboni will be an estimated$6,634.15. There was discussion on the Zamboni maintenance
including energy cost and expected additional life expectancy.
Fitch informed the board that the chiller goes down on occasion due to the breaker tripping in the new
power supply located outside. The panel gets wet and trips the breaker. Nafstad mentioned that staff
is looking into option and cost to install an awning to prevent roof runoff onto the cabinet.
New Business
Member Dwinnell asked staff on how more ice time could be sold especially in the summer. There
was discussion on what ice is currently booked, how booking is prioritized and options to sell more
ice.

Olympia repair: Machine picked up Thursday June 3rd by CTM Services. Hoping to get the
machine back in about 2 to 3 weeks.
Operations: 5-29-21 Alarm Suction Group control SG2 compressor 94 Fault Alarm. Reset the
fault and operations back to normal. 6-1-21 found pump #3 VFD tripped on input phase 4 loss.
Reset, started and checked operations normal. Awning ordered and should be delivered in about
2 weeks. Hoping this will help prevent the runoff from the Gold rink roof and pooling on top of
the power supply and tripping the GFCI breaker. Cost$520 with free shipping.
Arena Maintenance: Thanks to Albertville Public Works for crack filling the Arena parking lot.
Getting quotes to restripe parking stalls and handicap parking.
STMA Arena Usage Statistics: Total hours sold from March 23rd through September 12th 2021.
Details attached. STMA Arena 2 rinks 1008 hours, Buffalo 1 rink 468 hours, Elk-River 2 rinks
1100 hours, Rogers 1 rink 632 hours, Anoka 2 rinks 416 ice hours 218 turf hours and Princeton 1
rink 400 hours.
Albertville Friendly City Days: 8 teams and 2 divisions. 16 Games scheduled for Friday June
11th, Saturday June 12th and Sunday June 13th 2021. Spectators will be allowed
Minnesota Hockey: Minnesota Hockey announced 5-12-21 that their COVID-19 Rules and
Guidelines document officially retired on May 28th 2021, in conjunction with the State of
Minnesota removing restrictions on occupancy and social distancing. In accordance with the
State of Minnesota lifting its mandate, masks are no longer required for Minnesota Hockey
sanctioned events, effective immediately. Face masks are still recommended for people who are
not vaccinated,per the latest guidance by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Repurposing of old Lobby for Retail Space Concept

Hat Trick Hockey has inquired if the STMA Arena would be interested in repurposing the west
end of the original arena and leasing space for retail use.
Staff and Hat Trick Hockey have discussed conceptual repurposing of the space, as well as, a
potential lease arrangement.
Staff would like to discuss the concept with the Arena Board to see if this is a concept the Arena
Board is interested in.
I will be at the meeting with Hat Trick Hockey to present the concept and discuss some of the
key issues.
