2005-01-04 Test Pit Report r , .. ~ SEH MEMORANDUM TO: Bob Huering 9'\0.\ \ \ 5020 Jason Avenue NE Albertville, MN 55301 FROM: Jim Schulz, PE DATE: January 4, 2005 RE: Test Pit Report SEHNo. A-ALBEV 0409 14 Enclosed is a copy of the requested soils test pit report and location map pertaining to Outlot C, Prairie Run. The report indicates topsoil and soft clays unsuitable for building support. It would not be practical economically to complete site correction for the entire site, therefore, the site was constructed to plan grades with the understanding that when the future building location is determined, site correction for the building area would be completed at that time. Future pavement areas where more than 3 feet of fill was placed would not require site correction with an appropriate pavement design. jas/jmw Enclosure c: Pete Carlson, SEH (w/enclosure) Bob Moberg, SEH (w/enclosure) Larry Kruse, City Administrator (wi enclosure) u:lalalbevI040900Icorrlm-huering-0 1 0305 .doc Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc., 1200 25th Avenue South, P.O. December 17, 2004 Project AL-04-06183 Mr. Gary Pehn Pehn Gravel and Excavating Box 256 Albertville, MN 55301 Dear Mr. Pehn: Phone: 952.995.2000 Fax: 952.995.2020 Web: braunintertec.com Re: Test Pit Observations for the Proposed Development, Northwest of Kyler Avenue and Settlers Path, Prairie Run Addition, Albertville, Minnesota We have completed the test pit observations for the above proposed development. The purpose of the test pits was to assist in evaluating subsurface soil and conditions with regard to site grading for the proposed development. Available Information Test Pits 1 through 4 were taken at the approximate locations shown on the attached sketch and completed using a backhoe supplied by Pehn Gravel and Excavating. Soils Encountered Four test pits were excavated atthe site on October 25, 2004. The test pits generally encountered approximately 1 1/2 feet of clayey topsoil overlying clay glacial till to the termination depths ofthe test pits. The clay glacial till soils consist mainly of sandy lean clay with layers of lean clay, clayey sand and lenses of poorly graded sand. Some of the clay soils nearer the surface were judged to be soft, however, the glacial till clays appeared to be medium to stiff at depth. Site Grading The topsoil and soft clays are judged unsuitable for fill and building support. Table 1 summarizes the depths of topsoil and soft clay and provides recommended excavation depths at the test pit locations. The recommended excavation depths are based on lightly loaded one-- to two-story buildings that may have basements or be slab-on-grade structures. It should be noted that the test pits were performed prior to any grading activities and that fill may have been placed to achieve final grades. Test Pit Number TP-1 TP-2 TP-3 TP-4 Topsoil Thickness . feet) 1 1/2 1 1/2 1 1/2 I 1/2 Soft Clay Thickness feet 6 21/2 4 1/2 5 Recommended Excavation Depth (feet 7 .1 /2 ' 4 6 6 1/2 · Providing engineering and environmental solutions s'ince 1957 Fehn Gravel and Excavating Project AL-04-06183 December 17,2004 Page 2 The excavation to remove poor soils should be extended laterally at least 1 foot for each foot offill required below footings (1: I oversizing). In pavement areas where more than 3 feet of structural fill was required to attain grade, the soil correction work was limited to removing the surficial vegetation. The topsoil.and soft clays were left in place and fill placed over these soils. If future buildings are located in this area, additional soil correction work may be required under the future buildings. The excavations should then be backfilled where needed with properly compacted fill. The fill needs to be compacted to a minimum of95 percent of its Standard Proctor density. Where more than 10 feet of fill is needed below foundations, the minimum compaction should be increased to 98 percent. More than 10 feet of fill may also need a construction delay monitored by settlement plates. This could be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The remaining natural clays or compacted fill should be suitable for support of lightly loaded structures using typical spread footing foundations sized to exert a maximum net allowable soil bearing pressure of up to 2,000 pounds per square foot. Additional Evaluation and Testing During Construction Grading of some areas of the site can be difficult because of high moisture content clay soils. We recommend a geotechnical engineer or his representative be on site during the site grading. At that time, the suitability of the subsurface soils for support of fill and foundation loads can be further evaluated. Excavation depths and provided oversizing can also be documented. Compaction tests should be taken during the site grading operation, utility backfilling within the roadway areas, utility backfilling near building pads areas and foundation wall backfill operations. In general, compaction tests should be taken after about 2 feet of fill has been placed in the excavations and then at about 2-foot vertical intervals thereafter. 7 In parking lot areas, we recommend a proofroll be performed before and after placement of the aggregate base. The proofroll should be performed by observing the behavior of the subgrade soils when subjected . to the wheel loads of a fully loaded, tandem-axle end dump. These proofrolls should be observed by a geotechnical engineer.
