COMPANY HISTORY
Land of Lakes Stone Company was created through the desire of Greg Mundahl and
Mike Gardner, owners of Land of Lakes Tile Company, to expan4 into the slab stone
countertop business. Land of Lakes Tile Company is a tile installation business started 23
years ago in Minneapolis. After working there for a combined 30. years, Mundahl and
Gardner purchased the business in 1993 and increased sales by over 50% in their fIrst
year of ownership. The company currently maintains average annualsales of about
$ 1,300,000.
The expansion to include stone tops with the tile installation services that Land of Lakes
currently offer is a logical idea; many contractors expect tile installers to furnish the slab
work as well. This is a convenient service for a general contractor because if a tile
installer can provide the slab countertops for a project it means one less sub-contractor
for the general to deal with. It also enhances the coordination between the flooring and
countertop selection and installation.
Offering custom slab fabrication with tile installation is also a popUlar idea (as you will
notice in the competitors profIles section). Several of the latger tile installation
companies in the state also provide stone slab work fabricated in their own plants and
successfully market stone countertops through their tile businesses.
The timing around the formation of Land of Lakes Stone Company involves the
opportunity presented when Eric Dudley resigned as Vice-President of Sales and
Marketing for Capital Granite and Marble Inc. Because Land of Lakes Tile Co. had
formerly contracted work with Capital Granite, Mundahl and Gardener were familiar
with Dudleys' abilities in sales and service. Several meetings rev$led more individual
assets and a shared ambition to create a state-of-the-art slab fabrication facility that
would also house the tile installation business. A partnership was formed and the
groundwork begun.
Determining a location for the plant involved examining several critical factors. First, we
needed to be conveniently located for Metro area clients as well as fabrication talent from
the St. Cloud area. Second, we needed to stay in a position to service Land of Lakes Tile
Company's current client base. Third, the retail aspect of the stone business requires a
visible and easily accessible location. Forth, we were seeking a community that offered
some form of fInancial assistance towards the land purchase. The Albertville site meets
all of these requirements.
