Whether you have an aboveground pool or inground pool, safety should always be a top priority, especially when children are involved. Here are four kid-friendly pool safety tips for families from pentair.com: 1. LOCK IT UP Children are such curious creatures and nothing seems more interesting than a pool. Pool access should always be cut off when the pool is not in use. Install fences, gates, and locked doors to prevent access by children, pets, and other uninvited swimmers who could potentially fall in or be injured when playing unsupervised. 2. PAIR UP No one should ever swim alone. This goes for children, teens, and adults – even expert swimmers. Additionally, never leave children alone or unsupervised when swimming in the pool. Always use the buddy system when swimming and make sure there is an adult always watching the water when it is in use. When children are new to swimming or are still small, it’s important for an adult to always be within reach of the child, so prepare to get in the pool, too! 3. PUT UP TOYS Toys should never be left in or around the pool. This means you shouldn’t leave toys to dry in the sun on the deck. Toys in this area can be an issue if a child‘s searching for their favorite toy and can access the pool. If toys are wet from pool time, place them outside of the pool fence in a sunny area where they can dry. If needed, take them inside and put them near the kitchen sink or in the bathtub to dry. Leaving toys in or near the pool poses a serious threat to pool safety – so take this easy step and put them away! 4. PREPARE NOW You can’t put a price on preparedness, so take the time to become First Aid/CPR certified. It doesn’t take a lot of time and the benefits are honestly immeasurable. The Red Cross offers classes, so don’t hesitate to find one near you. In addition to being certified in First Aid and CPR, you should have a pool safety plan, a phone nearby with emergency numbers, and lifesaving equipment (like a hook or flotation device). Whether you own an aboveground pool or inground pool, maintaining a safe pool is important. Summer is just around the corner, and now is the time to prepare your pool and your family for the sun-filled days in the pool to come. The county population has grown an astounding 4.33 percent to 148,003 – the highest percentage increase in the state. The next highest are Cass County (3.76 percent), Sherburne County (3.32 percent), Isanti County (3.24 percent), and Mille Lacs County (3.09 percent). In terms of pure numbers, Wright County is second in the number of new residents with 6,143 – behind only Washington County (7,540, which represents a 1.2 percent increase). For many years, Wright County has been the 10th largest county in the state, but at its current rate of 10-year growth (a 21.65 percent increase based on 2021-22 increases), by the 2030 Census, the county population would be more than 170,000, which could find Wright County moving up to the seventh-largest county based on much slower growth in counties currently larger than Wright County – Olmsted (164,020), Stearns (160,045), and Scott (154,520). There are many advantages that draw people to call Wright County home and, from the looks of things, it won’t be slowing down any time soon. MPR News did an analysis of the growth counties and those losing populations can be seen here: www.mprnews.org/story/2023/03/30/the-new- place-to-live-in-minnesota-wright-county. LICENSE CENTER READY TO HANDLE WATERCRAFT NEEDS Posted on: April 19, 2023 You can transfer, renew, or register your watercraft for the first time at Wright County’s indoor service counter. Transferring a watercraft requires the current title for titled watercrafts or a bill of sale for non-titled watercrafts. First time registration does require a sales receipt from the store/business you purchased it from. For those simply renewing their watercraft license, you can also use the drive-thru located on the northwest corner of the building (3650 Braddock Ave. NE, Buffalo). For anyone needing replacement registration decals, they can be purchased at the office, but they will be mailed out by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), usually within seven days. The License Center can issue fishing licenses (if purchasing a combination license with a spouse not present, a voucher will be issued to be redeemed at a later time by the spouse). Fishing licenses can be purchased at the indoor service counter or drive-thru. Current regulation booklets are available on site. The License Center accepts all forms of payment (cash, check, or credit card with an additional service fee). Stormwater ponds are engineered to reduce the risk of flooding and protect the water quality of our lakes, rivers, and wetlands. Stormwater ponds decrease pressure on the storm sewer system by controlling the rate of water discharged downstream and provide treatment for pollutant- laden water before reaching our waterways. As stormwater flows across hard surfaces, it picks up and transports pollutants. Common pollutants found in stormwater include: 1. Leaves, litter, and trash 2. Grass clippings and yard waste 3. Lawn-care products such as fertilizers or pesticides 4. Sediment 5. Pet waste 6. Oils, greases, and automotive additives Residents are encouraged to help improve pond health by taking the steps suggested below: 1. Maintain natural vegetation or sod on all bare areas. 2. Add native plant species to filter runoff and absorb nutrients. 3. Use phosphorus-free fertilizer and fertilize only as needed. 4. Rake up trash, leaves, grass clippings, branches, and other yard waste off the street and curbs. Properly dispose of debris by transporting to compost facility. 5. Use biodegradable soaps for outdoor cleaning and car washing. 6. Reduce or eliminate winter salt use. 7. Pick up and properly dispose of pet waste. 8. Install a rain barrel to harvest rain for use on your lawn or garden. sainttherese.org/communities/corcoran 952.512.2019 For additional information or to make a reservation for an apartment. Just flowers, nothing complicated. You’ll only be digging about six or eight inches down, so you probably won’t hit anything important, right? Wrong. Underground utilities such as natural gas can run just inches from the surface – and hitting one with a shovel could be deadly. And it’s not just natural gas. You could hit a power line, too – and how would you feel if that caused, say, an entire hospital or your whole neighborhood to lose power? You could be putting others at risk as well as yourself. Fortunately, you can eliminate the guesswork (and obey the law!) by calling 811 or visiting the Gopher State One Call website (www.gopherstateonecall.org). It’s a free service that sends someone to locate utilities within two business days of contacting them. Need to mail something to the City of Albertville? The facility is designed to collect, treat, and safely discharge its resulting effluent and biosolids. Albertville’s WWTF was originally constructed in 2000. In 2005, the facility was expanded to accommodate the City’s growth and the additional wastewater flows. In 2019, due to more stringent environmental standards, the WWTF’s point of discharge was relocated from the adjacent Hunter’s Lake to the Mississippi River approximately five miles away. Beginning this summer, the facility will undergo a number of improvements, including a new mechanical biosolids dewatering system, electrical upgrades, and replacement of aging equipment. The project cost is approximately $11,500,000 and will be completed over the next two years. The City has been budgeting for this project for a number of years and has successfully lobbied for state and county funding. For more information on the project please contact City Hall. Interested? See below for the many ways you can save water in your home with toilets, showers, clothes washing, faucets, and leaks. Home water use calculator: www.dnr.state.mn.us/water/watermgmt The questions in the Water Use Calculator help you estimate how much water you use, how your consumption compares to the average American home, and what you can save by switching to more efficient appliances. • Showers • Toilets • Clothes washing machines • Taps and faucets • Leaks OUTDOORS Outdoors, Americans use nearly 9 billion gallons daily on their lawns and landscaping. Poop from pets, like dogs and cats, can carry germs like bacteria and parasites that can make people sick. Poop from pets can also contaminate waterways and harm the environment. Practice responsible pet poop habits to keep yourself, your family, and the environment healthy. SCOOP THE POOP! • Always pick up dog poop and dispose of it properly. • Dog poop should be picked up, even in your own yard, and especially in areas where children may play. • Clean litter boxes daily and change the litter weekly. • People with weakened immune systems and pregnant women should not clean litter boxes if possible, as they are more at risk for complications from germs spread by cats. If no one else can perform the task, wear disposable gloves and wash your hands afterwards. • Keep your cat’s litter box away from other animals, children, and food preparation areas.
