Women of Today
S-T Mq In 1950, a group of passionate women formed
/ \the Mrs. Jaycees of Minnesota —an organization
dedicated to community service. They've evolved as
Q all groups do, officially becoming the St. Michael-
4 Albertville Women of Today (STMAWT) in July
ccO F 4D 1985. Despite its organizational changes, that
core commitment has never wavered as STMAWT
continues to fundraise and service the community today.
WHO IS THE STMA WOMEN OF TODAY?
STMAWT is a local chapter of the Minnesota Women of Today
and United States Women of Today organizations. The group
focuses on community service, personal growth, and building
friendships. Today, STMAWT has 29 members who have been
with the group for anywhere from one to over 30 years, with
several having joined more than 20 years ago.
The group hosts an annual craft fair the Saturday before
Thanksgiving (November 23, 2024, this year) to raise funds. This
money is then used within the community, giving back more than
$30,000 annually and supporting the St. Michael and Albertville
fire departments, various STMA schools, Great River Regional
Library, and many other local groups. Additionally, STMAWT
volunteers hundreds of service hours for events and projects,
such as Albertville Friendly City Days, St. Michael Daze and
Knights, and Bunny Fest.
INTERESTED IN JOINING STMAWT?
STMAWT members enjoy countless opportunities to give back
to the community, develop personally through socializing and
leading projects, and so much more. The group also hosts
numerous events, such as casino night, going to plays and
movies, and other fun outings planned by chapter members.

What Is Juneteenth?
JUNETEENTH COMMEMORATES AN EFFECTIVE
END OF SLAVERY IN THE UNITED STATES,.
Full Story By: Elizabeth Nix I Published On:
history.com/News/What-ls-Juneteenth
Juneteenth (short for "June Nineteenth") marks the day
when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865
to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved
people be freed. The troops' arrival came a full two
and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation
Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in
the United States and is considered the longest -running
African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, it officially
became a federal holiday. Juneteenth 2024 will occur on
Wednesday, June 19.
Confederate General Robert E. Lee had surrendered at
Appomattox Court House two months earlier in Virginia,
but slavery had remained relatively unaffected in Texas —
until U.S. General Gordon Granger stood on Texas soil
and read General Orders No. 3: "The people of Texas are
informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the
Executive of the United States, all slaves are free"
THE EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION
The Emancipation Proclamation issued by President
Abraham Lincoln on January 1,1863, had established that
all enslaved people in Confederate states in rebellion against
the Union "shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free"
But in reality, the Emancipation Proclamation didn't instantly
free any enslaved people. The proclamation only applied to
places under Confederate control and not to slave -holding
border states or rebel areas already under Union control.
However, as Northern troops advanced into the Confederate
South, many enslaved people fled behind Union lines.
City Offices and the STMA Arena will
be closed Wednesday, June 19, 2024 in
observance of Juneteenth.

City of Albertville Earns Recognition
from Minnesota Pollution Control
Agency for Operational Excellence
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) is recognizing
the City of Albertville for outstanding operations in 2023.
To receive this recognition, facilities must demonstrate
consistent compliance with monitoring, operations, and
maintenance requirements; submit accurate, on -time reports
to the MPCA; and employ staff certified by the MPCA in
wastewater operations.
'Communities across Minnesota rely on wastewater treatment
facilities to stay healthy and well,' said Nicole Biasing, Municipal
Division director at MPCA. 'Operators at the City of
Albertville are critical to protecting and preserving
water quality, and the MPCA is deeply grateful for their
considerable efforts and service to their community."
More than 50 years ago, the Clean Water Act established
the basic framework for regulating pollution in waters by
creating water quality standards to protect drinking water
and to maintain a healthy aquatic community for animal and
recreational uses. These standards lead to the development of
clean water before it is returned to a river or stream.
Minnesota has approximately 1,600 municipal and industrial
wastewater treatment facilities with 253 qualifying for the
outstanding operations recognition.
